Do you need a scanner, an accessibility platform, or both?

An accessibility scanner evaluates content for issues it can detect automatically. An accessibility management platform helps a team coordinate the ongoing work around those issues. Some products combine both, so compare actual capabilities rather than relying on the category name.

Start with the job you need to do.

Each team need, and the capability to evaluate for it.

  • Check a page for detectable issues

    Automated evaluation

  • Understand coverage across a website

Page discovery, crawl scope, and evaluation results

  • Review results as the site changes

    Scheduled or repeat monitoring

  • Give remediation an owner

    Assignment, status, and prioritization

  • Preserve questions and decisions

    Issue discussion and history

  • Check a deployed fix

Retesting and a way to record appropriate human evaluation

  • Explain the work to stakeholders

Accessible records and any reporting the team requires

A scanner may provide several of these capabilities. A management platform may require a separate testing tool. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the exact workflow you need.

Where Ility fits.

Ility combines full-site scanning and monitoring with collaborative issue tracking and AI-assisted code guidance. Its purpose is to help teams move from detected issues to owned remediation work and a record of what happened.

Where does an overlay fit?

An overlay changes aspects of a website’s presentation or behavior through added software. That is a different job from organizing testing and remediation. Ility does not add an accessibility overlay; your team addresses the underlying website.

Why Ility isn’t an overlay

Illustrative scenario.

A practical decision.

A developer testing a component during implementation may start with an evaluation tool. A team responsible for an evolving website also needs to decide who reviews results, who fixes issues, and where verification is recorded. Those responsibilities determine whether additional management capabilities are useful.

The team still needs to investigate barriers, implement changes, and test the experience. Management capabilities make that process easier to coordinate.

You can retain tools that serve your evaluation needs. Check how their results will enter the working process; do not assume a platform has an integration or importer without confirming it.
